Wheeler Crest Fire Protection District

Serving the community of Swall Meadows in Mono County California, Wheeler Crest Fire Protection District provides fire protection and first responder medical care to it’s over two hundred residents as well as neighboring communities, the heavily traveled Hwy 395, and thousands of acres of wildland.

The Wheeler Crest Fire Protection district goes by several names: “the fire department,” “Swall Meadows fire department,” “Wheeler Crest fire department,” and others. The fire department manages a fleet of 4 fire trucks including 2 engines and 2 water tenders, housed in a 3398 square foot fire station.

Eastern Sierra

The Eastern Sierra landscape is filled with stunning vistas and amazing recreational opportunities. It is “The Land of Little Rain,” with an average precipitation of 5 inches, nearly all of it falling in the winter. Summers are dry with temperatures ranging from the low 80s to the high 90s depending on elevation.

Swall Meadows is located in southern Mono County, California. The community is residential, including second homes with no commercial development. Geographically, it sits below the Wheeler Crest at an elevation of 6,000 to 7,000 feet. It is in Great basin/pinon-juniper ecozone, with views south along the Sierra Crest of Mt. Tom, and east across Owens Valley to the White Mountains toward Nevada. Swall Meadows is approximately 20 miles north of Bishop and 25 miles south of Mammoth Lakes.

Fire protection is provided by the all-volunteer Wheeler Crest Fire Protection District (WCFPD). The WCFPD has been recognized for its professionalism, organization, and responsiveness, making it one of the best fire departments in the region. The Department trains weekly, developing technical skills and building teamwork.
